Foster and special needs adoptive parents come in all shapes and sizes,
as do the children they nurture. Parents may be married or single. They may be childless or have children living at home. Still others raised their own children to adulthood, but want to continue parenting. Many find the opportunity to love and care for children through our Foster Care and Special Needs Adoption programs.

Our region's special needs children are waiting for permanent homes, while foster children, who often have been removed from their homes, need temporary safe havens where they stay an average of nine months. Special needs children include boys and girls three years or older, sibling groups, racial and ethnic minorities, and children with physical, mental or emotional challenges.

Parenting these children requires a natural love of children. Often it requires an ability to set guidelines, provide direction, and work with our staff as part of a team. These children may have been abused or neglected, and parenting may call for stamina, a healthy attitude and special skills. Parents must be in good physical and mental health. CFS offers free ongoing training, information services, referrals, education, support groups and mentoring.

Couples and single adults over 18 years old with good moral character and a safe, stable and adequate home are eligible to become foster or special needs adoptive parents. Parents may rent or own their home, and they may work outside the home.

All services are free, and parents receive reimbursement for child care and certain health expenses. Prospective adoptive parents are carefully screened; those with felony convictions or proven neglect charges are not eligible.
